Coal

IMG_5522

For the last two Winters we have mostly burnt Homefire Ovals in our MORSO Squirrel stove, but at nearly £13 a bag it is a bit expensive. We were told later last winter that Pureheat was just as good and at just over £10 a bag we started using that. It seemed to burn just as well as the more expensive ovals , so the decision was made to use it this Winter. We met up with Jules and Richard on their coalboat at Stoke Bruerne to load up with Pureheat, only to be told that they have now stopped producing it. So we now have to find another type to use . Jules said that one of her most popular coals is Winterblaze and also Excel so we have bought 2 bags of each to try. Although very cheap Winterblaze is not smokeless and I can see it causing a few problems in built up areas . It would be good to know what other boaters are using and how well it stays in etc.…

    1. Hi Dave , Thanks for that . Its only cheaper if we buy a ton or more which we cant store, But if we are ever iced in it could be the only way of getting coal. I will keep the link in case we need to use them thanks Gary

  2. I have a Morso Squirrel. So far I have tried Stoveheat, Supertherm, Taybrite, Phurnacite, Homefire Ovals and Excel. Excel has won every time on my stove. Least ash, hottest burn, good just for tickover, easy to light, easy to keep in overnight, doesn't clog the flue or chimney so only have to sweep once or twice a year and £10 per 25kgs bag off some coalboats. What's not to like? :-) I appreciate that even with the same stove, boaters experiences of the same fuel can vary. Hope you find what suits you. Cheers, John, NB Samsara, currently on the Cov.

    1. Hi John , Many thanks for that info .We are now well into a bag of Excel and everything you said is spot on . It has even stayed in for over 15 hours. So it looks like we will be staying with Excel.....Gary
